Body Landscape (1994-present)

The Sleeping Giant Collection

Back to Retrospective

One thing that caught my imagination while making the earlier Body Landscape paintings,
was the existence of mountain ranges around the world that are locally named Sleeping Giant.

The Body Landscape series is my way to communicate the affinities I observe between
the forms of the earth and the human form. I am exploring the animation and sensuality
that I perceive in nature. I am also celebrating the intrinsic beauty of the body. I use color
to bring out the atmosphere and high-contrast light conditions that express my vision.
I look at the earth as a living, breathing, heaving existence that is independent of as well as connected to our own existence.

Over the last few years I was introduced to the literature of hard science fiction — scientists writing about the future. It has given me a new perspective of the earth and life: from the point of view of the universe. This new perspective has awakened great excitement and energies in me. It has opened my mind to fantastic possibilities for our future. I am painting my experience dealing with these fantastic possibilities.
