Conceived in the summer of 2000, during a period of personal turmoil, Cleansing is based on the notion of experiencing a shower as a time to wash away troubling thoughts. I chose my colors for their ability to evoke the moodiness I was feeling. Presented as triptychs, the paintings represent the process of spiritual cleansing, starting with the moment one becomes aware of the shower space. I wanted to show the awareness image in rich, agitated colors. With my eyes shut and focusing on the notion of washing away, the action of the water moved me into an inner space where everything that is felt or known has an edge that is electric and glowing. To complete the process I chose more harmonious colors and a reverse image. This idea presented itself in the process of painting the same image over and over. It allowed me to rediscover the concept each time, go back into the feelings, each repetition once removed from the previous, and end with a notion of personal, inner calm.
